ABA stands for Applied Behavior Analysis. "Applied Behavior Analysis is the process of systematically applying interventions based upon the principles of learning theory to improve socially significant behaviors to a meaningful degree, and to demonstrate that the interventions employed are responsible for the improvement in behavior" (Baer, Wolf & Risley, 1968).
A quick answer is: almost anything. As long as it is a behavior, and it can be observed, ABA principles can be used to either increase or decrease that behavior. As a science, ABA is utilized to increase and improve socially significant behaviors. Socially significant behaviors include language, communication, social skills, academics, daily living skills such as toileting, dressing, eating, personal self-care, fine and gross-motor skills, domestic, leisure and work skills.
There are several different options to pay for services. Family Model behavior Therapy accepts payment in the following ways:
(a) Private Pay - private pay allows for clients to access behavior support at ANY time and select the specific BCBA which would best meet their needs. Parents choose this option because you can customize your therapy to work on ANY skill or area of life without limitation or restriction that you otherwise wouldn't be able to receive if you were to go through insurance or the regional center.
(b) Insurance - Individuals and families can contact their private insurance provider and determine the extent to which their ABA services can be covered through their insurance plans, including copays and coverage options.
(c) Medi-Cal - Individuals and families who qualify for medical/medicare may be covered for services through the state when they present with an autism diagnosis.
(d) Regional Center - Consumers may qualify to receive services through regional center, which would mean all costs are covered, and the service is free to the family.
Almost all major insurance plans. Each insurance plan covers ABA services to a different degree. It is recommended that you contact the mental health department of your insurance provider (on the back of your insurance card) and obtain the following information: What are my mental health benefits? What is the maximum annual benefit for autism treatment services? Do I have a deductible? Do I have a copay? Is there an annual out-of-pocket maximum for copays and/or deductibles?
